# Heraklion in May: Worth Your Time?
May is genuinely one of the better times to visit Heraklion, and I’ll tell you why without overselling it.
The weather sits around 25°C, which sounds perfect on paper, and mostly it is. You’ll get warm, sunny days that are actually enjoyable for wandering rather than the brutal, squinting heat of August. The 20mm of rain sounds alarming but it translates to maybe two or three overcast afternoons across the whole month, not persistent drizzle. Pack a light layer for evenings because once the sun drops, the temperature follows faster than you’d expect.
Crowds are manageable, particularly in early May. By the last week of the month you’ll start feeling the season warming up in more ways than one – tour groups begin arriving at Knossos in earnest and the waterfront restaurants fill up by 8pm. That said, compared to July or August, May still feels like you’re experiencing a real city rather than a theme park version of one.
Everything is open. This matters more than people realise. Knossos, the Archaeological Museum (genuinely excellent, not just fine-I-suppose excellent), the Venetian fortress at the harbour – all operating full hours. Some smaller sites run reduced schedules in shoulder season, but May has crossed that threshold. Restaurant menus are complete, boat trips are running, and locals haven’t yet disappeared into summer survival mode.
Who is this actually for? It suits people who want the history and culture without suffering for it. Families with school-age children will find the pace comfortable. It’s less ideal if you’re purely beach-chasing – the sea is refreshing rather than warm, typically around 20-21°C, which some people love and others find a rude shock.
**One practical tip:** Book Knossos tickets online before you go. The queue to buy tickets on-site can absorb an hour you didn’t budget for, and standing in that exposed car park is miserable even in pleasant weather. Spend that hour eating somewhere good instead.
Heraklion in May is an honest yes.
