# Milos in May: The Sweet Spot Before It Gets Silly
May is genuinely one of the better times to visit Milos, and I’ll tell you why without trying to sell you anything.
The weather sits around 24°C, which is pretty much perfect. You’ll get warm, sunny days where swimming feels genuinely good rather than a brave act of endurance, but you won’t be melting into the volcanic rock at 2pm wondering what you’ve done to yourself. That 20mm of rainfall sounds alarming but it usually means a handful of grey mornings that clear by lunchtime, nothing dramatic. Pack a light layer for evenings because the breeze off the water has some bite to it once the sun drops.
The crowds are manageable, which matters enormously on an island this small. Milos in August is genuinely overcrowded for its infrastructure – boats to Sarakiniko and Kleftiko fill up fast, restaurants book out, and the roads feel chaotic. In May you can actually enjoy Sarakiniko without climbing over forty other people trying to get the same photograph. The famous boat trips are running but not rammed.
Most things are open by mid-May. Restaurants in Adamas and Plaka are operating, boat tour operators are doing regular departures, and you’ll find enough life that it doesn’t feel like a ghost town. Early May can be slightly patchier – the first two weeks some smaller tavernas are still finding their feet.
Is it worth it? Yes, especially if you’re someone who finds peak-season Greek islands exhausting or overpriced. Photographers, couples, older travellers, anyone who wants to actually look at the landscape rather than queue for it – May works brilliantly for you. Solo travellers will find it sociable without being chaotic.
If you’re 25 and want beach bars until 4am, come back in July.
**One practical tip:** Book your boat trip to Kleftiko early in your stay, not as an afterthought. Departures are less frequent than high season and they do fill up, even in May.
