# Hydra in April: Worth the Trip?

Honestly? April is one of the better times to visit Hydra, and I say that as someone who’s also done August there and nearly lost my mind.

The island in April feels like it’s shaking off a long sleep. Temperatures sit around 20°C, which is genuinely pleasant for walking – and walking is basically your only transport option here since cars are banned. You’ll clock serious steps exploring the port, climbing to the monasteries, and wandering the backstreets without arriving somewhere drenched in sweat. Expect around 30mm of rain across the month, which sounds manageable but typically shows up as a handful of grey, showery days rather than constant drizzle. Pack a light rain jacket and forget about it.

Crowds are light but not absent. Greek Easter falls in April some years, which briefly transforms the island into something magical and surprisingly busy. Check the dates before you go – if your trip overlaps with Orthodox Easter week, you’ll witness candlelit processions that feel genuinely moving, but accommodation fills up fast and prices jump.

Most restaurants and tavernas are open by mid-April, particularly around the port. Some of the smaller places in the upper town are still closed or running reduced hours in early April, so don’t expect everything to be fully operational. The famous Bratsera Hotel and a few boutique spots are typically running by now. Beaches are swimmable for the brave – the water hovers around 17°C, so most people admire them rather than actually swim.

Is it worth it? For couples, solo travellers, photographers, and anyone who finds peak-season Greek islands exhausting, absolutely yes. Families with kids who need beach clubs and animation teams might find it a touch quiet. The island’s character – donkeys carrying deliveries, cats on every step, that extraordinary car-free silence – comes through far more clearly without summer crowds diluting it.

**Practical tip:** Book accommodation with a harbour view and confirm directly with the property that they’re actually open. April bookings occasionally get quietly cancelled if owners decide to delay opening. A quick phone call saves a nasty surprise.
