# Meteora in October: The Honest Version
October is genuinely one of the better months to visit Meteora, and I say that as someone who’s seen it in July when you’re basically shuffling through a sweaty queue just to glimpse a monk’s kitchen.
The weather sits at a comfortable 18°C, which is pretty much perfect for the walking involved. You’re moving between monasteries, climbing stone staircases, standing on exposed viewpoints – you do not want to be doing any of that in August heat. Bring a layer though, because mornings up on the rocks can feel noticeably cooler than whatever your weather app promised, and that 45mm of monthly rainfall has to land somewhere. You’ll likely get a couple of grey, drizzly days in your trip. Here’s the thing though – mist rolling through the rock formations is genuinely spectacular. Some of the best photographs of Meteora exist because of bad weather, not despite it.
Crowds are significantly thinner than summer but not gone. Weekends still pull tour buses from Thessaloniki and Athens, so if your schedule has any flexibility, Monday to Thursday visits to the monasteries are noticeably calmer. The village of Kalambaka itself feels more like an actual place rather than a tourist processing facility.
All six monasteries that allow visitors are still open in October, which matters – a couple have reduced winter hours from November onward. Opening times vary by day and monastery, so check before you go because showing up on the wrong afternoon means a locked gate and a long walk back down for nothing.
Is it worth it? For most people, absolutely yes. It’s particularly good for photographers, hikers, and anyone who finds meaning in these places rather than just ticking them off. It’s probably not ideal if you’ve got young kids who need sunshine and predictable days to stay cooperative.
**Practical tip:** Download offline maps before you arrive. Mobile signal disappears in several spots between the monasteries, and the paths aren’t always as obvious as the tourist signs suggest.
