# Dubrovnik in October: The Honest Version
October is genuinely one of the better times to visit Dubrovnik, and I say that as someone who’s also been there in July and spent most of that trip resenting other tourists and sweating through my shirt on the city walls.
**What it actually feels like**
Sixteen degrees sounds chilly on paper but it rarely feels it. You’ll walk around in a light jacket during the day and feel perfectly comfortable. The Adriatic is still warm enough to swim in early October, around 20°C, though by late month you’d want to be fairly committed. There’s real autumn light hitting those limestone walls and it’s honestly beautiful. The rain, about 45mm across the month, tends to come in proper short bursts rather than grey drizzle all day. You might lose a morning. Pack a small umbrella and stop catastrophising.
**Crowds and what’s open**
The cruise ships thin out significantly after the summer peak, which means the Stradun becomes walkable again rather than a slow-moving river of people. Restaurants are still open and actually happy to see you. Cable car, city walls, Lokrum island ferry – all running. Some beach bars have closed for the season but you weren’t coming for those anyway. A handful of smaller restaurants close mid-month for owner holidays, so check ahead if somewhere specific matters to you.
**Is it worth it and for whom**
Yes, straightforwardly, if you want to actually experience the place rather than survive it. It suits couples, older travellers, anyone who finds summer crowds genuinely unpleasant, and photographers who understand what good light means. It’s less ideal if you’re travelling with kids who need reliable beach days or you’re expecting a buzzing nightlife scene.
**One practical tip**
Book the city walls walk for early morning, around 9am. Even in October, tour groups arrive mid-morning and the walls get surprisingly congested. Earlier, you get the views largely to yourself, the light is better anyway, and you’ll finish before the heat builds.
Worth it. Go.
