# Rhodes in March: Honest Thoughts
March in Rhodes sits in that awkward in-between place. The island is technically awake but not fully dressed yet, and whether that suits you depends entirely on what you’re actually after.
The weather is mild rather than warm. Expect around 16°C on good days, which feels pleasant enough when the sun appears, but noticeably cool in the shade or when the wind picks up off the water. That 45mm of rainfall sounds manageable on paper, but it tends to arrive in concentrated bursts rather than gentle drizzle, so you’ll have genuinely grey, wet days mixed in with bright crisp ones. Pack accordingly and don’t build an itinerary that falls apart when it rains.
Crowds are minimal, and this is genuinely the main selling point. The medieval Old Town of Rhodes, which gets absolutely suffocating in July and August, is yours to actually wander in March. You can photograph the Street of the Knights without negotiating around tour groups, sit in a café without waiting, and have a proper conversation with locals who aren’t exhausted by their fifth consecutive month of peak season.
What’s open is the honest sticking point. Plenty of restaurants, beach bars, and smaller hotels remain shut through March, particularly outside Rhodes Town. You won’t find a skeleton service; you’ll find whole neighbourhoods dormant. The beaches exist but nobody is swimming, and the famous east coast resort strips feel genuinely abandoned.
The archaeological sites and the Old Town itself are fully accessible year-round, so if history and walking are your main motivations, March delivers well. Butterflies Valley is obviously not doing its thing yet, but the landscape is green and the light is soft and lovely.
Is it worth visiting? Yes, but for a specific type of traveller. If you want warm swimming weather and a buzzing resort atmosphere, wait until May at the absolute earliest. If you want to explore properly, think clearly, spend less money, and experience a place rather than just its tourism infrastructure, March is genuinely rewarding.
**Practical tip:** Base yourself in Rhodes Town rather than the resorts. Everything worth having in March is there.
