Visiting Rhodes in December

Visiting Rhodes in December

Weather in December: Average high 10.1°C, 65mm rainfall.

# Rhodes in December: The Island With the Lights Off

Look, Rhodes in December is a completely different animal to the place that swallows a million tourists every summer. Whether that’s a good thing depends entirely on what you’re after.

The weather is genuinely mild compared to northern Europe, but don’t let that fool you into packing your swimsuit. At around 10 degrees you’ll need a proper jacket, and those 65mm of rainfall don’t spread themselves politely across the month. You get grey stretches, sudden downpours, and occasional bright crisp days that remind you why people fell in love with the Mediterranean in the first place. It’s unpredictable in the way that actually keeps things interesting.

The crowds are basically nonexistent. Rhodes Old Town, one of the most genuinely impressive medieval walled cities in Europe, belongs almost entirely to you. You can stand in the Street of the Knights without a single selfie stick in your eyeline. Locals are relaxed, unhurried, and noticeably warmer in their interactions when they’re not processing thousands of people an hour. Restaurants that are open are genuinely good, because they’re cooking for people who live there.

Here’s the honest catch though: a significant chunk of things simply close. Beach bars, water sports, many hotels, and tourist-facing restaurants shut up completely from November through March. Some villages feel almost abandoned. If your vision of a Greek island involves sundowners and tavernas overflowing with atmosphere, December will feel hollow in places.

It’s genuinely worth visiting if you’re a history person, a walker, a photographer, or someone who finds crowds genuinely exhausting and values atmosphere over amenities. The Valley of the Butterflies, the Acropolis at Lindos, the Old Town walls — all spectacular without the scrum. It’s not worth it if you need guaranteed sunshine, beach days, or a buzzing nightlife scene.

**Practical tip:** Book accommodation that’s actually in Rhodes Old Town itself. Many places outside the walls close entirely in winter, and being inside the medieval city during the quiet months is exactly the experience that makes December make sense.
