# Heraklion in January: The Honest Version
Look, January in Heraklion is not the Crete you’ve seen on Instagram. The sea is grey, the temperature sits around 9 degrees, and you’ll probably get rained on at some point during your trip. That’s just the reality.
But here’s the thing – it’s actually not bad, depending entirely on what you’re after.
The city feels genuinely Cretan in January rather than performing a version of itself for tourists. Locals are back in the tavernas, prices are noticeably lower, and you can walk around the Venetian harbour without elbowing past tour groups. The old market street, 1866, is busy with actual shoppers rather than people photographing octopus hanging on washing lines. There’s something grounding about that.
The Heraklion Archaeological Museum is absolutely open and arguably at its very best – you’ll have the Minoan collection almost to yourself, which is extraordinary given what’s in there. The Palace of Knossos is also open, though check current hours as they sometimes reduce in winter. Walking around Knossos in cool, quiet weather with almost nobody else there is genuinely a better experience than sweating through it in August alongside several thousand strangers.
Expect some restaurants and smaller hotels to be closed, particularly anything that depends heavily on summer trade. The city centre is fine and well-stocked with options, but don’t expect everything to be running.
Is it worth visiting? For history and culture, absolutely yes. For beach holidays or outdoor hiking, you’re taking a gamble and probably losing. The rain isn’t constant, but 60mm across the month means several genuinely wet days, not just light drizzle. Pack accordingly and mentally prepare for at least one afternoon stuck indoors.
The crowd situation is wonderful if you find peak-season tourism exhausting. It’s essentially a non-issue.
**One practical tip:** Book accommodation in the city centre itself rather than outlying beach resorts. Half those places are shuttered in January, and you’ll want easy access to the covered market and indoor attractions when the weather turns.
