Let’s be straightforward with you. Skiathos in January is a completely different island from the sun-drenched postcard version, and whether that’s a good or bad thing depends entirely on what you’re after.

The weather is genuinely rough. Eight degrees sounds manageable until the wind comes off the Aegean and cuts straight through you. The 60mm of rain that falls across the month doesn’t arrive politely spread across thirty days either — it tends to dump itself in grey, moody bursts that keep you inside staring at your hotel window. You’ll need a proper waterproof jacket, not the thin one you brought for “just in case.”

The crowds, though — or rather the absence of them — are remarkable. Skiathos Town in summer is shoulder-to-shoulder tourists, every taverna packed, every narrow street a slow shuffle. In January you essentially have the place to yourself. You’ll nod at the same twelve people every day. It has genuine character when the performance of high season isn’t happening.

What’s actually open is the real question. Expect probably a third of restaurants and bars to be functioning, a handful of cafés where locals actually go, and the supermarkets. The famous beach clubs are shuttered and honestly look a bit sad under grey skies. Koukounaries beach in January feels appropriately dramatic and desolate rather than beautiful.

Is it worth going? For most holidaymakers, honestly, no. You’re not getting the swimming, the nightlife, or the full taverna experience you’re probably imagining.

But if you’re a walker who wants empty pine-covered hillsides to yourself, a writer needing cheap, quiet accommodation with genuine solitude, or someone specifically trying to see a tourist island without the tourism, January actually delivers something real. Prices are low, locals have time to talk to you, and the island stops pretending.

**One practical tip:** Call ahead before booking any restaurant. Don’t just show up assuming it’s open — even places listed online may be closed for the entire winter without updating anything.
