# Skiathos in April: Honest Thoughts

April in Skiathos sits in that interesting middle ground where the island is properly awake but hasn’t yet lost its mind to summer crowds. At 18.7°C you’re not sunbathing weather exactly, though plenty of optimistic northern Europeans will attempt it anyway. Think light jacket in the morning, t-shirt by afternoon, light jacket again by evening. It’s genuinely pleasant for walking around rather than melting.

The 30mm of rain is real and worth respecting. You’ll likely get a few proper grey days scattered through the month, sometimes a stretch of them together. This isn’t the end of the world, but if you’re coming specifically for beach time, April can feel like a gamble you didn’t quite win.

What’s actually open is the main question, and the honest answer is: most things, but sleepily. Skiathos Town itself has enough year-round residents that restaurants and cafes are functioning. You won’t struggle for a decent meal or a coffee. The famous Banana Beach and Koukounaries are accessible, just quieter. Some smaller tavernas and beach bars are still in soft-launch mode, opening sporadically or not quite yet.

The crowd situation is genuinely lovely if you’ve done Skiathos in July and felt slightly traumatised. The airport isn’t chaos. You can walk down the main strip without being shoulder-to-shoulder. You can actually see the old town properly rather than through a wall of people carrying cocktails.

It’s worth visiting in April for walkers, couples who want a relaxed reset, photographers, and anyone who finds the summer version of Greek islands slightly exhausting. It’s probably not worth it if beach swimming is your primary goal, the sea sits around 17°C and only the committed are getting in.

**One practical tip:** Book accommodation but don’t over-plan restaurants. The joy of April is wandering in somewhere half-empty and getting genuinely looked after rather than processed. The locals have time for you in a way they simply don’t in August, and that changes the whole experience more than the weather does.
