# Zadar in September: Honest Take

September is probably the sweet spot for Zadar, though I’d caveat that depending on what you’re actually after.

The temperature sitting around 24-25°C feels genuinely pleasant rather than punishing. July and August in Zadar can be brutal, sweaty, and absolutely rammed with package tourists who have no particular interest in the city beyond using it as a base. By September, that crowd has thinned considerably. The Old Town still has plenty of visitors — don’t kid yourself that you’ll have the Sea Organ to yourself at sunset — but you can actually walk the marble streets without feeling like cattle being moved through a chute.

The rain figure of around 113mm sounds alarming but don’t panic about it too much. September rain in Dalmatia typically comes in short, sharp bursts rather than grey all-day drizzle. You’ll probably get a few genuinely stormy afternoons, and occasionally that means a full lost day. Pack a light waterproof and mentally budget for one day of sitting in a konoba drinking wine while the rain hammers the harbour. Honestly, worse things have happened.

Most things are still open and running properly. Restaurants are staffed, boat trips to the islands are operating, and the water temperature is still genuinely swimmable — usually around 22-23°C. The beaches are more manageable than peak summer but still active.

**Is it worth it?** For couples, solo travellers, or anyone who values actually experiencing a place over maximum beach hours, absolutely yes. For families needing guaranteed wall-to-wall sunshine for kids who need to be in the sea every single day, maybe look at early June instead.

**One practical tip:** Book accommodation anyway. September has a loyal repeat-visitor crowd who know exactly what I just told you about it being the sweet spot. The good apartments and smaller guesthouses fill up faster than you’d expect, and the remaining options tend to be overpriced for what they are. Sort your place early and then relax about everything else.
