# Vis in May: Honest Take

May is genuinely one of the better times to visit Vis, but let’s be clear about what you’re actually getting.

The island is properly awake by May, unlike April when half the restaurants are still deciding whether to bother opening. You’ll find most konobas trading, the ferry running normally, and enough fellow travellers around to create atmosphere without the suffocating crush that July and August bring. The main town and Komiža have that rare quality of feeling like actual places rather than tourist infrastructure with a village attached.

At 18.5°C you’re looking at pleasant warmth rather than heat. Comfortable for walking the interior, sitting outside with wine in the evening, and exploring the military tunnels and vineyards without sweating through your shirt. Swimming is technically possible but the Adriatic is still sitting around 18-19°C in the water, which means most people wade in, make a face, and wade back out. If you’re from northern Europe you’ll probably manage it. If you’re expecting warm bath conditions, wait until July.

The 62mm of rainfall sounds alarming but it typically comes in sharp bursts rather than grey drizzle lasting days. You might lose an afternoon. You probably won’t lose a week.

Crowds are light by Croatian coastal standards. You’ll get restaurant tables without reservations. You’ll have Stiniva beach largely to yourself, which in August involves queuing for a boat and sharing the cove with several hundred strangers. That alone is worth consideration.

Who is this actually for? Couples, solo travellers, people who want to eat well, drink good plavac mali, and walk somewhere beautiful without being herded. Families with young children wanting guaranteed beach-focused holidays might find the water temperature a frustration.

The one thing nobody tells you: bring a layer for evenings. That 18°C drops noticeably after sunset and the sea breeze has an edge to it. People consistently underpack for May in Dalmatia and spend their evenings shivering outside restaurants wishing they’d thrown in a light jacket.
