# Makarska in September: The Sweet Spot Nobody Talks About Enough
September in Makarska is genuinely one of the better times to visit, and I say that as someone who’s been there in peak July and nearly lost my mind queuing for a coffee on the Riva.
The weather sits around 25 degrees, which sounds modest until you’re actually there and realise it’s perfect. Hot enough to swim comfortably – the Adriatic holds its warmth well into the month – but you’re not lying on the beach at noon feeling like you’re being slowly cooked. Evenings become genuinely pleasant rather than just slightly less sweaty. The 113mm of rainfall sounds alarming on paper, but it typically arrives as short, dramatic afternoon storms that clear quickly. You’ll have maybe two or three properly grey days across the whole month.
Crowds drop noticeably after the first week. European school terms restart, so the chaos of August dissolves fairly fast. The beach at Nugal becomes walkable again. You can actually see the Biokovo mountain backdrop without someone’s parasol blocking it. Restaurants have tables available. This matters more than people admit.
Most things remain open throughout September – restaurants, boat trips, the cable car up Biokovo if the weather cooperates. Some smaller beach bars start closing mid-month, and a handful of tourist shops begin winding down, but the town functions normally. It’s not a ghost town situation like you’d find in November.
Who is this month actually for? Couples, older travellers, anyone who finds August crowds genuinely exhausting, hikers who want Biokovo without heat stroke, and people who care about value – prices soften noticeably. Families with school-age kids are mostly gone, so it skews slightly quieter and older in feel.
If you hate it? You might find it slightly melancholy if you wanted that full buzzing holiday atmosphere. The energy is calmer, which is either the point or a disappointment depending on you.
**Practical tip:** Book accommodation for the first weekend of September well in advance. The transition from August isn’t immediate, and that first week still catches plenty of people out.
