# Alicante in March: Honest Thoughts

March in Alicante sits in that slightly awkward shoulder season where the city hasn’t fully woken up yet but is definitely rubbing its eyes. The weather averages around 18°C, which sounds lovely on paper and genuinely is compared to most of northern Europe at that time of year. You’ll get plenty of moments where you’re sitting outside in a light jacket thinking life is pretty good. But don’t pack exclusively for sunshine. That 46mm of rainfall has to land somewhere, and March can throw a few grey, drizzly days at you that feel more Atlantic than Mediterranean. It’s not relentless, but it happens.

The crowds situation is honestly one of the best things about visiting now. The seafront promenade, the castle hill, the old town streets – you can actually move through them like a human being. Summer Alicante gets absolutely hammered with tourists and the city loses some of its personality under the weight of package holiday infrastructure. In March you get locals going about their actual lives, cafes with space at the bar, and restaurant staff who have time to talk to you.

Most things are open, though some beach bars and seasonal spots are still shuttered. The Santa Barbara Castle is fully accessible and worth the walk up. The central market is operating and genuinely excellent for a browse and breakfast. If you time it right, the Las Hogueras de San Juan preparations haven’t started yet but the city has a calm, pre-season energy that’s quite appealing.

Who is this month best for? Honestly, couples and solo travellers who want atmosphere without chaos, anyone who prefers exploring to sunbathing, and people who find peak-season prices quietly depressing. Families chasing guaranteed beach weather should probably wait until May.

One practical tip: bring a compact umbrella and genuinely use it as your daily companion rather than leaving it in the apartment. The rain often arrives quickly and passes just as fast, and you’ll kick yourself standing under a shop awning watching your afternoon disappear.

Worth it? Yes, for the right person.
