# Alicante in April: The Honest Version
April is genuinely one of the better times to visit Alicante, though not quite for the reasons travel sites usually tell you.
The weather sits around 20°C, which sounds perfect on paper, and mostly it is. You’ll have plenty of sunny days where sitting on the Explanada with a coffee feels genuinely lovely. But April carries real rain too — nearly 46mm across the month, which typically arrives in sharp, heavy bursts rather than persistent drizzle. You can have three gorgeous days followed by a dramatic afternoon downpour that sends everyone scrambling. Pack a light rain jacket and don’t build your entire itinerary around beach days, because the Mediterranean sea is still cold enough to make swimming more of a brave novelty than a pleasure.
Crowds are refreshingly manageable. The Spanish school holidays fall partly within April, so expect some busier weekends, and Semana Santa (Easter week) brings noticeable domestic tourism to the old town and castle area. Outside those specific dates though, you’re looking at a city that feels like it belongs to people who actually live there. Restaurants aren’t heaving, you can walk up to Santa Bárbara Castle without queuing, and hotel prices are considerably more reasonable than July and August levels.
Everything is open and operating normally, which isn’t guaranteed in all Spanish coastal towns during shoulder season. The MARQ archaeology museum, the old quarter bars, the Mercado Central — all running properly.
April suits independent travellers, couples, and anyone who actively dislikes sharing their holiday with half of northern Europe. It’s also good for walkers and people interested in the city itself rather than just the beach. If your heart is set on baking in guaranteed sunshine and swimming daily, come back in June.
**Practical tip:** Book accommodation near the old town rather than the beach strips. In April the beach areas feel slightly empty and disconnected, whereas the Barrio de la Santa Cruz neighbourhood keeps proper atmosphere regardless of the weather.
It’s a solid month. Just bring that jacket.
