# Cannes in April: The Sweet Spot Before the Madness

Okay, so April Cannes is genuinely one of my favourite versions of the place. You’re catching it before the Film Festival circus arrives in May and transforms the whole town into an impenetrable wall of lanyards and self-importance. The difference is remarkable.

The weather sits around 17-18°C, which sounds modest but actually feels really pleasant in practice. You’ll want a jacket in the evenings and you should absolutely pack something waterproof because you’re looking at meaningful rainfall – not constant drizzle, but proper showers that arrive without much warning. Don’t let that put you off. A wet afternoon on the Croisette is still better than a sweaty, overcrowded one.

Crowds are light by Riviera standards. The beach clubs are starting to wake up, restaurants are operating properly rather than winter skeleton mode, and you can actually walk along La Croisette without feeling like you’re navigating a conveyor belt of tourists. The Marché Forville market is brilliant and relaxed. You can browse without elbowing anyone.

The Île Sainte-Marguerite boat trip is absolutely worth doing in April. The crossing is quick, the island is beautiful, and you’ll have the paths through the eucalyptus forest largely to yourself. This is genuinely not something you can say in July.

Who’s it really for? Couples who want atmosphere without exhaustion, older travellers, anyone who likes good food and gentle exploration over beach-lying. If you’re coming specifically to swim and sunbathe, the sea temperature is still pretty bracing and the beaches aren’t fully set up yet. Come back in June for that.

Is it worth visiting? Genuinely yes, with realistic expectations. It’s charming rather than buzzing. You’ll eat well, sleep without noise, and see what the town actually looks like underneath all the glamour marketing.

**Practical tip:** Check whether your dates overlap with the Cannes Lions or any pre-Festival industry events – even in April, certain weeks see business travellers pushing hotel prices up sharply. Booking a fortnight out rather than a few days makes a real difference to your wallet.
