# Gozo in January: The Honest Version

January in Gozo is the island’s best-kept secret, though “secret” partly means you’ll be wandering around wondering where everyone went.

The weather sits around 14-15°C, which sounds mild until the Atlantic-influenced wind cuts across the limestone plateau and reminds you this isn’t a beach holiday. Bring a proper jacket. The 49mm of rain is spread across multiple days rather than constant downpours, so you’ll get bright, sharp mornings followed by dramatic skies in the afternoon. The light is genuinely beautiful – photographers love it. You will not be getting in the sea unless you’re unhinged.

**What it’s actually like**

Quiet. Genuinely, almost eerily quiet. Victoria (Rabat) functions normally – the market, the bakeries, the bars where old men argue about football – but tourist-facing stuff operates on reduced hours or closes entirely. Some restaurants in Marsalforn and Xlendi shut completely until March. The ones that stay open are usually excellent because they’re cooking for locals, not tour groups.

The Citadel is magnificent in January. You’ll share it with almost nobody. Ggantija temples, same story. The inland villages feel completely authentic because there’s no tourist layer obscuring them.

**Is it worth it?**

For certain people, absolutely yes. If you want slow travel, walking the coastal paths without stepping around selfie sticks, eating well cheaply, and actually talking to Gozitans rather than observing them, January delivers completely. Hotels are significantly cheaper and genuinely available.

If you need sunshine guaranteed, beach swimming, or a buzzing nightlife scene, go in May or October instead. January won’t deliver those things and you’ll resent the island for it.

Walkers, writers, people recovering from something, couples who like their own company, anyone who finds summer Gozo too crowded and commercialised.

**One practical tip**

Rent a car before you arrive, not after. January availability sounds like it should be easy, but the fleet shrinks dramatically off-season and you’ll be stranded without one. The bus network is kind, but infrequent.
