# Tivat in March: Honest Thoughts

March in Tivat sits in that awkward shoulder season where the town hasn’t quite decided to wake up yet. You’re looking at around 13 degrees on a decent day, which sounds reasonable until the Adriatic wind cuts through and reminds you that your jacket isn’t actually warm enough. Expect rain too – around 45mm across the month, usually arriving in moody grey spells rather than sustained downpours. Some days are genuinely lovely. Others feel like the whole bay is wrapped in damp tissue paper.

The crowds are essentially nonexistent, which is either the point or the problem depending on why you’re coming. Porto Montenegro, the glossy marina development that dominates the town’s identity now, is largely quiet. The superyachts are mostly elsewhere. Restaurants around the waterfront operate reduced hours or don’t open at all mid-week, and you’ll sometimes find yourself walking through genuinely empty streets wondering if you’ve missed some local holiday.

What is open tends to be the everyday stuff – local cafes, the supermarket, bakeries doing brisk morning business. The old town area of Tivat is small enough that you cover it thoroughly in an afternoon. The airport, ironically, stays busy because Tivat works well as a base for driving around the bay to Kotor, which is far more compelling in March and still quieter than summer.

**Is it worth visiting?** If you’re using Tivat as a launch pad for exploring the wider Bay of Kotor, genuinely yes. Accommodation is cheap, roads are quiet, and Kotor’s old town and the mountain villages above it are atmospheric in grey weather in a way they simply aren’t when packed with cruise passengers. If Tivat itself is the destination, the honest answer is wait until May.

This works best for independent travellers who drive, photographers who like moody light, and anyone who finds peak-season Adriatic tourism exhausting.

**Practical tip:** Rent a car on arrival. The bus connections around the bay are infrequent and the real appeal of the region in March is going wherever looks interesting without being timetable-dependent.
