Visiting Marmaris in December

Weather in December: Average high 15.8°C, 159.2mm rainfall.

# Marmaris in December: The Honest Version

Let me be straight with you. December in Marmaris is not the turquoise-water, cocktail-on-the-beach experience the brochures sell. The resort essentially hibernates, and whether that’s a problem depends entirely on what you’re looking for.

**What it actually feels like**

Fifteen degrees sounds almost reasonable until you factor in the wind coming off the water and the fact that nothing is heated properly because nobody expects tourists to be there. You’ll want a proper jacket. The 159mm of rainfall means you’re getting genuine Atlantic-style rainy days, not just the odd shower. Some weeks can be surprisingly mild and bright. Others are just grey and damp. December is a gamble.

**The crowds situation**

Nonexistent. The famous bar street is eerily quiet, the harbour is mostly fishing boats, and you can walk through the old town bazaar without being hassled once. If you’ve visited in summer and hated the chaos, December Marmaris feels like a different planet.

**What’s actually open**

Honestly, not much. The majority of hotels, restaurants and boat tour operators close completely between November and April. You’ll find a handful of local restaurants serving actual Turkish food rather than tourist menus, a few tea houses, and the basics. The castle and museum stay open, which is worth your time. The Wednesday market still runs.

**Is it worth going?**

For beach holidays, absolutely not. For hikers tackling the Lycian Way nearby, budget travellers who want to base themselves cheaply while exploring inland towns like Köyceğiz, or anyone who genuinely loves off-season, slightly melancholy seaside towns, yes. Accommodation prices drop dramatically and you’ll get a much more authentic sense of the place.

**One practical tip**

Book accommodation carefully and contact the property directly before confirming. Many listings on booking platforms remain live all year even when the place is physically shuttered. Finding your hotel closed on arrival in December with limited alternatives open is a genuinely miserable experience that catches people out every single year.
