**The good stuff is genuinely good.** The Duomo di Amalfi stops you cold. That Arab-Norman facade rising above the piazza, the striped arches, the mosaics — it earns every photograph taken of it. Step inside and the crowds seem to dissolve for a moment. The Paper Museum is a genuine surprise, a quirky and atmospheric little gem about the town’s medieval papermaking industry that most people skip entirely. Don’t skip it. Ravello, perched above the chaos with its Villa Rufolo gardens and jaw-dropping coastal views, is frankly magnificent — calmer, more elegant, and worth the winding drive up alone. And speaking of driving the coast road, yes, it is as spectacular as everyone claims. The Amalfi Drive is legitimately one of Europe’s great road experiences, assuming you have a driver or nerves of steel.
**Now for honesty.** Amalfi town itself is tiny and absolutely overwhelmed. During peak season it functions less like a village and more like a theme park queue with limoncello shops. The main street from the harbour to the cathedral is congested beyond comfort, and if you’re spending serious luxury money expecting some kind of tranquil Italian idyll, the town centre will disappoint you. The lemon groves are charming but fairly incidental — a backdrop more than a destination. And at luxury budget levels, you’re paying significantly for views and prestige rather than exceptional service or accommodation that would genuinely compete with, say, the Amalfi Coast’s better Ravello hotels.
**The smarter play** is using Amalfi as a stop rather than a base. Stay in Ravello or Positano, drive or boat in, hit the Duomo and the Paper Museum in a morning before the crowds peak, then leave before lunch turns the piazza into a rugby scrum.
**Verdict:** Worth visiting, not worth over-staying. The coast road, Ravello, and the cathedral are legitimately world-class experiences. The town itself, at very high crowd levels, will test your patience. Come for the half-day, not the long weekend, and manage your expectations accordingly.
