# Selçuk in July: What You’re Actually Getting Into
Let’s be straight with you: July in Selçuk is hot. Not “oh how Mediterranean” hot, but genuinely punishing, standing-in-a-car-park-at-noon, 36.5 degrees hot. The rain essentially doesn’t exist — 3.1mm for the whole month means you will not see a cloud do anything useful. The sky is a relentless, beautiful, exhausting blue.
That said, people visit and have a wonderful time. Here’s who they are and why it works.
**What it actually feels like**
The heat hits seriously by 10am and by 1pm the main street through town feels like a slow cooker. Ephesus, which is all marble and open hillside with zero shade on the main paths, becomes genuinely difficult in the middle of the day. Not dangerous if you’re sensible, but not enjoyable either. You’ll see people limping back to the entrance looking defeated.
**The crowds**
July is peak season. The cruise ships dock at Kusadasi, the tour buses roll in, and Ephesus fills up fast. The House of the Virgin Mary gets queues. The Basilica of St John is more manageable, and the town of Selçuk itself — the actual streets, the market, the excellent Thursday bazaar — stays relatively local in feel, which is one of its best qualities.
**What’s open**
Everything. This is the upside. Every restaurant, guesthouse, and site is fully operational. The rooftop bars are open, cold Efes is everywhere, and the local melon season is at its absolute peak, which is reason enough.
**Is it worth it?**
For the archaeology obsessives, yes — you’re not skipping Ephesus for weather comfort. For families with school-age kids, July is often the only option and it’s fine with planning. For people with heat sensitivity or anyone who struggles above 30 degrees, honestly consider late September instead.
**One practical tip**
Book the earliest possible entry slot at Ephesus — doors open at 8am — and be done before midday. The site transforms completely before the buses arrive. That single decision will make or break your experience.
