# Kalkan in January: The Honest Truth

Let me be straight with you. January in Kalkan is not the turquoise-water, sun-lounger fantasy that every Instagram post sells you. The town gets serious rainfall – over 220mm across the month – and temperatures hover around 14 or 15 degrees. That’s mild enough to walk around comfortably in a jacket, but nobody’s swimming, and you’ll have days where the clouds sit heavy over the mountains and everything feels a bit grey and damp.

But here’s the thing. Some people absolutely love it for exactly that reason.

The crowds are essentially nonexistent. Kalkan in summer is genuinely beautiful but genuinely packed, with the narrow streets clogged and restaurants requiring booking days ahead. In January you can wander those same streets completely alone, sit in a cafe and actually hear yourself think, and get a proper sense of what the town actually is rather than what it becomes under tourist pressure. The harbour looks dramatic in winter light, and the surrounding Taurus Mountains often have snow on the peaks while you’re standing at sea level in a fleece. That contrast is quietly spectacular.

Regarding what’s open – manage your expectations. A good chunk of restaurants and shops close entirely from November through March. You won’t get the full choice. However, some places do stay open catering to the small trickle of visitors and local residents, so you won’t go hungry or bored. Just research specific places before you commit to the trip.

Is it worth going? For a specific type of person, genuinely yes. If you want complete peace, dramatic scenery, cheap accommodation, and you’re happy hiking muddy trails, visiting Patara or Xanthos without another tourist in sight, and reading books in quiet restaurants, January works well. If you’re chasing sunshine and a beach holiday, wait until May.

**One practical tip:** Pack layers and a genuinely waterproof jacket. Not a light shower jacket – a proper one. A wet day in Kalkan with inadequate kit feels very long indeed.
