# Amalfi in May: The Sweet Spot Before the Madness
May is genuinely one of the better times to visit Amalfi, and I’ll tell you why without overselling it.
The weather sits around 21°C, which is warm enough for a light dress or shirt but you won’t be dying on the cliffsides. Expect some rain though – May brings about 80mm across the month, so not a washout, but you’ll likely hit at least a few grey afternoons or morning showers. Pack a small umbrella and don’t plan your entire trip around outdoor-only activities. The upside is that rain here is dramatic and kind of beautiful against those cliffs, so it’s not automatically a ruined day.
Crowds are building but not yet catastrophic. June, July and August are genuinely unpleasant in terms of sheer human volume on those narrow streets and the coast road. May gives you something closer to what Amalfi actually feels like rather than what it looks like in a traffic jam of tour buses. You can walk into the Cathedral of Sant’Andrea without queuing extensively, get a table at a decent restaurant without booking three weeks ahead, and actually stand somewhere on the waterfront without someone’s selfie stick in your face.
Everything is open. This matters because shoulder season elsewhere can mean half the town is shuttered. By May, Amalfi is fully operational – boats running to Positano and Capri, restaurants at full capacity, shops stocked.
Who should come in May? Couples who actually want to enjoy the place rather than survive it. People who care more about good food and atmosphere than guaranteed beach weather. Hikers doing the Path of the Gods will find temperatures genuinely comfortable rather than brutal.
Who might struggle? Anyone whose happiness depends entirely on beach swimming – the sea is still chilly, around 18°C. You’ll feel it.
**One practical tip:** The coast road gets congested even in May. Take the ferry between towns wherever possible. It’s cheaper than you think, faster than the bus, and the views are the whole point anyway.
