# Lagos in August: What It’s Actually Like
Look, August in Lagos is peak everything. The Algarve’s most popular town hits maximum capacity this month, and you need to know what you’re walking into before you book.
The weather is genuinely brilliant. You’re looking at around 30°C most days with barely any rain – that 5mm monthly average basically means one brief shower the whole time. The Atlantic keeps things from feeling oppressive, so it’s warm rather than suffocating. Evenings are perfect. No complaints there whatsoever.
The problem is everyone else knows this too.
August is when southern Europeans take their own holidays, layered on top of the already enormous British, German and Dutch crowds. Meia Praia and Dona Ana beaches are packed by 10am. The old town restaurants fill up fast, and you’ll queue for the good ones. Praia do Camilo, that gorgeous cliff-framed beach everyone has on their camera roll, becomes genuinely frustrating – the wooden staircase turns into a one-way human traffic jam by midday.
Everything is open, which is the genuine upside. Every boat trip, kayaking company, sunset cruise, market stall and beachside bar is running at full capacity. The town has real energy and the nightlife around Rua 25 de Abril is buzzing. If you want Lagos dead and quiet, this is not your month.
So who should go in August? Honestly, younger travellers and families who want maximum activity, guaranteed sunshine and don’t mind paying peak prices for the privilege. The atmosphere is festive and sociable if you lean into it.
Who should reconsider? Anyone easily frustrated by crowds, couples wanting something romantic and peaceful, or budget travellers – accommodation costs significantly more and availability disappears fast.
**One practical tip:** Rent a car and drive 20 minutes to the quieter Sagres beaches like Praia do Martinhal or Praia da Ingrina. Same weather, fraction of the people. You get your August sunshine without feeling like you’re queuing for a theme park ride.
Lagos in August delivers exactly what it promises. Just know what that promise actually is.
