# Lagos in December: What It’s Actually Like
Let’s be honest with you. Lagos in December is not the Lagos of those Instagram photos — the ones with terracotta cliffs glowing in golden light and impossibly turquoise water. That Lagos exists, but roughly between June and September.
December Lagos is quieter, cooler, and genuinely lovely if you know what you’re walking into.
**The weather is real.** Nearly 10°C is properly chilly, especially with Atlantic wind cutting across the waterfront. Pack layers you’d wear in an English autumn, not a suitcase full of sundresses. The 65mm of rainfall sounds alarming but it tends to come in bursts rather than grey all-day drizzle. You’ll get decent dry spells, moody skies, and occasionally a beautiful clear afternoon that makes the whole trip feel worth it.
**The crowds are essentially gone.** This is the genuine appeal. Ponta da Piedade — those dramatic sea stacks and grottos that get absolutely mobbed in summer — you can have almost to yourself. You can actually hear the waves. Kayak tours still run when conditions allow, and you’re not sharing the ocean with forty other boats. The town feels like a town rather than a staging area for tourism.
**What’s open is the honest question.** Some restaurants close entirely or shift to weekend-only hours. A handful of boat tour operators pack it in until March. It’s worth emailing places ahead of time rather than assuming. The market, the cafes along the main pedestrian strip, and most of the town’s year-round spots remain open and genuinely welcoming.
**Is it worth it?** For couples, solo travellers, photographers, and anyone who finds summer crowds exhausting — yes, genuinely. For families expecting beach holidays with the kids in the water, probably not the right timing.
**One practical tip:** Bring a windproof layer specifically, not just a thick coat. The cold here is all about exposure to coastal wind, and it will find every gap.
Go with adjusted expectations and Lagos in December punches well above its weight.
