# Berat in February: Honest Thoughts
Look, February in Berat is not the glossy Instagram version of Albania. It’s grey, it’s damp, and that 10-degree average feels colder than it sounds when you’re climbing cobblestones slicked with rain toward the castle. The 50mm of rainfall isn’t constant misery, but you’ll definitely get caught out at least once without a decent jacket. Pack layers and waterproof shoes, not sandals.
That said, there’s something genuinely compelling about being here in the off-season.
The crowds are basically nonexistent. The UNESCO old town, which can feel performatively quaint under summer tour groups, actually belongs to you in February. You can wander the Mangalem quarter and hear nothing but dogs barking and old men talking inside somewhere warm. The famous “city of a thousand windows” looks quietly dramatic under low cloud, honestly more atmospheric than in harsh sunshine.
Most of what matters stays open. The castle is accessible, the key churches and mosques are generally visitable, and the National Ethnography Museum keeps reasonable hours. Restaurants in town do operate, though some spots aimed purely at tourists may be closed or running reduced hours. Eat where locals eat and you’ll be fine – the food is cheap and genuinely good.
Is it worth going? For most people, no – if you want warmth, colour and easy enjoyment, come in May or September. But if you’re someone who actively likes having ancient places to yourself, who doesn’t mind weather being part of the experience, or who’s travelling through Albania and wants to include Berat without the high-season price creep, then absolutely yes. It suits independent travellers who find empty streets more interesting than crowded ones.
**Practical tip:** The path up to the castle gets genuinely treacherous when wet. Wear proper grip shoes rather than anything smooth-soled. Multiple people have learned this the hard way, and the views at the top, while worth it, don’t require a twisted ankle.
Go in knowing what it is. It rewards that honesty.
