# Himarë in January: The Honest Version

Look, January in Himarë is genuinely strange. The Albanian Riviera without the summer circus feels like stumbling onto a film set after the crew has packed up and left. That beautiful bay, those crumbling communist-era hotels, the dramatic limestone cliffs — they’re all still there, just weirdly quiet and a little melancholy in a way that’s either deeply appealing or slightly depressing, depending on your personality.

**What it’s actually like**

Nearly 8°C means you’ll want a proper jacket, not just a light layer. The rain — around 60mm across the month — tends to come in grey, persistent spells rather than tropical downpours, so you spend a fair bit of time watching clouds move over the Ionian from a café window. The sea looks spectacular in that moody, steel-grey way. You won’t be swimming in it unless something has gone seriously wrong with your decision-making.

**Crowds and what’s open**

Himarë basically hibernates. A chunk of restaurants and guesthouses shut completely, and the ones that stay open do so with reduced hours and a slightly surprised expression when you walk in. The beach bars are shuttered. The promenade is yours entirely — sometimes uncomfortably so. Locals go about actual daily life, which is genuinely interesting to observe. The town feels Albanian again rather than pan-European party destination.

**Is it worth it?**

For certain people, absolutely yes. If you want solitude, cheap accommodation, dramatic coastal scenery and the freedom to think clearly without someone offering you a cocktail, this works beautifully. Photographers and writers tend to love it. Families with small children, people wanting restaurants reliably open past 8pm, or anyone needing guaranteed sunshine — wait until May.

**One practical tip**

Don’t assume your guesthouse has heating that actually functions well. Albanian coastal accommodation is built for summer. Ask specifically about heating before you book, or pack a decent sleeping layer regardless of what the listing says. Cold nights in a damp room will reshape your opinion of the whole trip faster than anything else.
