# Himarë in May: Honest Thoughts

May is genuinely one of the better times to visit Himarë, and I say that as someone who’s also been there in August and spent half the time resenting other tourists.

The weather sits around 22°C most days, which means you can actually walk around without dissolving. The sea is cold — let’s be honest about that. You’ll see optimistic people wading in and making that sharp intake of breath face. Some will swim properly and claim it’s refreshing. They’re not entirely lying, but it’s not Mediterranean bath-warm yet. If swimming is your main goal, consider waiting until June.

That 20mm of rain sounds alarming but it typically shows up as a couple of moody afternoons rather than sustained misery. Pack a light layer and you’ll be fine. The rain actually makes the mountains behind the town look extraordinary, all low cloud and drama, which you’d completely miss in the bleached-out haze of summer.

Crowds are light. Genuinely light. The beach bars and restaurants along the main stretch are open — most have figured out that May tourism is worth catering to — but you won’t be fighting for a table or a sun lounger. The village itself feels like an actual place rather than a seasonal theme park. Locals outnumber visitors, which changes the atmosphere entirely.

The castle above town is accessible and atmospheric, the seafood restaurants are serving properly, and you can have a relatively spontaneous trip without booking everything three weeks ahead.

Who is this month for? Hikers, people who like having a beautiful place mostly to themselves, couples, anyone who finds peak-season coastal tourism actively unpleasant. It’s not ideal for families whose children will absolutely demand warm sea swimming.

**One practical tip:** don’t assume every smaller restaurant listed online is definitely open — hours are unpredictable in shoulder season. Walk the main road in the evening, see what’s actually lit up and busy, and make your dinner decision then rather than showing up somewhere dark and locked.

Worth it in May? Yes, quite genuinely.
