# Genoa in August: What It’s Actually Like
Let’s be straight with you: August in Genoa is when most actual Genoese people leave. They head to the Ligurian coast, to mountain villages, to anywhere with a breeze. What you’re left with is a city that feels genuinely hollowed out in places, with some neighbourhoods running at maybe half their usual rhythm.
That said, 23.6°C is honestly pretty manageable compared to Rome or Sicily in August. You’re not melting. The maritime air keeps things from getting suffocating, and evenings along the waterfront are genuinely pleasant. That 5mm of rain is almost nothing – call it one short shower across the whole month, barely worth packing an umbrella for.
The crowds here are interesting. Genoa doesn’t attract the same tourist volumes as Florence or Venice, so August doesn’t transform it into an unbearable theme park. You’ll notice tourists, particularly around the Porto Antico and the Aquarium, which stays open and is actually popular with Italian families on holiday. The caruggi – those narrow medieval lanes in the old city – remain atmospheric and largely walkable. Some independent shops and smaller restaurants do close for two weeks or so mid-month, which is mildly frustrating if you’re after authentic local eating rather than tourist-facing places.
Museums mostly stay open. The Palazzo Ducale, the Strada Nuova museums – these are all accessible and noticeably quieter than peak spring season, which is genuinely a pleasure.
**Is it worth visiting in August?** For architecture lovers, history enthusiasts, or anyone who finds Genoa’s slightly rough-edged authenticity appealing, yes, absolutely. It suits independent travellers who are comfortable with a city doing its own thing around them. Families wanting beach proximity can day-trip to the Riviera easily. It’s not ideal if you specifically want buzzing local life or a full range of restaurants.
**One practical tip:** Book accommodation early anyway. The city is quieter, but the good-value places still fill up with August travellers who’ve been priced out of coastal spots.
