Weather in October: Average high 17.8°C, 45mm rainfall.

# Ischia in October: The Honest Version

By October, Ischia has exhaled. The summer madness – the packed ferries from Naples, the beach umbrellas wedged together like sardines, the restaurants turning tables every 45 minutes – is essentially over. What’s left is something genuinely nicer, if you can make peace with a few trade-offs.

The weather sits around 18°C, which sounds pleasant and mostly is. You’ll get warm afternoons where a light jacket feels unnecessary, followed by evenings where you’ll absolutely want it. The sea is still swimmable early in the month – the water holds summer heat longer than the air – but by late October most people are done with that idea. The 45mm of rain means you should expect a few grey, drizzly days scattered through the fortnight. Not constant rain, but proper autumn showers that arrive without much warning. Pack accordingly rather than optimistically.

Crowds are dramatically reduced, which transforms the place. You can actually walk through Ischia Porto without performing a human slalom. Restaurants have time for you. Hotel rates drop noticeably. The thermal parks – Negombo and Poseidon, Ischia’s real draw – are still operating but winding down, so check closing dates before booking because some shut entirely by month’s end.

What closes first is the beach infrastructure: beach bars, sun lounger rentals, anything coastal-casual. The island’s interior, the hiking trails up Monte Epomeo, the ceramic shops and wine producers in Sant’Angelo, the thermal baths in Casamicciola – these remain alive and worth your time.

Who should go? Couples, solo travellers, anyone who prioritises atmosphere over beach-lying. People who want to eat well without booking a week ahead. Anyone doing a wider Naples and Campania trip who wants a relaxed overnight stop rather than a full summer commitment.

**One practical tip:** the ferry and hydrofoil schedules thin out in October. Missing the last hydrofoil to Naples because you lingered over dinner is a very real possibility. Screenshot the timetable on day one and actually look at it.

It’s worth it. Just go in with honest expectations.
