Visiting Kos in May

Visiting Kos in May

# Kos in May: Honest Thoughts

May is genuinely one of the better times to visit Kos, and I say that as someone who’s seen the island in peak summer and found it borderline exhausting.

The weather at this point is properly warm rather than scorching. You’re looking at highs around 24–27°C most days, with plenty of sunshine but without that aggressive July heat that makes walking around the old town feel like a punishment. Rainfall is low and getting lower as the month progresses – early May might throw you the odd grey morning, but it’s not something to lose sleep over. The sea is cool but absolutely swimable, especially by the second half of the month.

Crowds are meaningfully lighter than summer, which matters on an island that gets absolutely rammed by mid-July. The main sites – the Asklepion, the ancient agora, Neratzia Castle – are all open and actually enjoyable to walk around without queuing or being shuffled along. Restaurants and bars are open, the waterfront is functioning, but you’re not fighting for a sunbed or waiting 45 minutes for a table.

What’s genuinely nice is that the locals are still in a relatively good mood. By August, some of them are visibly done with tourists, which is understandable. In May there’s a different atmosphere – things feel like they’re warming up rather than burning out.

Is it worth it? For couples, older travellers, or anyone who finds peak-season Greek islands genuinely stressful, May is a sweet spot. Families with young kids do well here too since beaches aren’t overcrowded and everything’s operating. If you need thumping nightlife seven nights a week, you might find it slightly quiet early in the month – give it until mid-May and that scene picks up considerably.

**Practical tip:** Rent a bike early in your trip. Kos is unusually flat for a Greek island, cycle paths actually exist and work, and getting to the quieter beaches on your own schedule in May – before the rental queues build – is one of the genuine pleasures of visiting then.
