Where to Stay in Chios

Where to Stay in Chios

Chios doesn’t get the tourist crowds that hammer Rhodes or Santorini, which works heavily in your favor if you’re watching your budget. Accommodation prices stay reasonable year-round, and even in summer you won’t feel the pressure to book six months ahead like you would on the more famous islands.

The best area for budget travelers is Chios Town itself, the island’s main port and commercial hub. You’ll find affordable guesthouses and small family-run hotels within walking distance of restaurants, supermarkets, and the waterfront. Staying here means you don’t need to rent a vehicle immediately, which saves real money. The medieval castle district inside the town is atmospheric and worth considering if you can find a room there, though options are limited.

The southern villages, particularly the mastic villages like Pyrgi and Mesta, attract travelers looking for something more unique. These medieval fortified settlements are genuinely extraordinary, and some small guesthouses operate within the village walls. Prices are comparable to Chios Town but the experience feels far more special. The honest downside is that you’ll absolutely need transport to explore from here, so factor in scooter or car rental costs before assuming it’s cheaper overall.

Avoid the northern beach resort areas if you’re budget-conscious and traveling outside peak season. Many places there close entirely from October through May, and the ones that stay open often aren’t worth what they charge for the isolation you’re accepting.

For genuinely tight budgets, look at apartments rather than hotel rooms. Chios has a healthy supply of self-catering options that drop significantly in price if you book directly with owners rather than through major platforms. Sending a message through a listing but finalizing payment directly is common practice here and saves everyone the commission fees.

The booking mistake most people make is assuming they need to stay near the beach. Chios Town beaches are walkable or a short bus ride away, and you’ll pay noticeably less for accommodation that isn’t marketed as beachfront. The island is small enough that location matters far less than you’d expect.
