Visiting Aegina in May
Visiting Aegina in May
# Aegina in May: Pretty Much the Sweet Spot
Honestly, if someone asked me when to visit Aegina, May would be near the top of my list, and I’d feel good about saying that.
The weather is genuinely lovely rather than theoretically lovely. Temperatures sit somewhere in the low-to-mid twenties Celsius most days, which means you can actually walk around the Temple of Aphaia without feeling like you’re being slowly cooked. Evenings are warm enough to eat outside without a jacket becoming essential, though you might want one handy later in the night. Rain is possible, particularly in early May, so don’t assume it’ll be wall-to-wall sunshine. It won’t ruin your trip, but pack a light layer that can handle a drizzly afternoon.
The crowd situation is where May really earns its reputation. Greek islands in July and August become entirely different animals, often unpleasant ones. In May, Aegina is busy enough that everything is open and functioning properly, restaurants are staffed and motivated, the pistachio stalls along the harbour are well-stocked, but you’re not fighting for space or paying absurd prices for a mediocre sunlounger. Weekends will be livelier because Athenians make day trips here constantly, it’s only about an hour by ferry, so if you’re staying overnight you’ll notice Saturday feeling noticeably more crowded than Tuesday.
Everything worth seeing is open. The Temple of Aphaia, Agios Nektarios monastery, the harbour restaurants, the beaches. Nothing is shuttered or running on skeleton-crew winter hours.
Who is this month actually good for? Almost anyone. Couples, solo travellers, people who want culture alongside the beach, anyone who prioritises atmosphere over packed nightlife. Families with younger kids do really well here in May because the sea is becoming genuinely swimmable without being the madhouse of summer.
**Practical tip:** Take the fast ferry rather than the slower option if you’re coming from Piraeus. The journey feels like a treat rather than a chore, and you arrive with energy rather than mild nausea.
Worth it? Yes, fairly confidently yes.
