Where to Stay in Thassos

Thassos is one of those Greek islands that still feels relatively accessible without demanding a luxury budget, but you need to be strategic about where you base yourself to get the most from your money.

Limenas, the island’s capital, is the smartest choice for budget travelers. It has the widest range of affordable accommodation, easy access to the ferry port, and enough tavernas and supermarkets to keep daily costs low. Rooms here are plentiful and competition keeps prices reasonable, especially if you book a simple studio apartment rather than a hotel room. The town beach is walkable, and you can reach other parts of the island easily using the local buses, which are genuinely cheap and reliable by Greek island standards.

Skala Potamia on the eastern coast is another solid option. It sits near the beautiful Golden Beach and attracts a moderate crowd rather than the peak-season chaos you find in some Greek hotspots. Small family-run guesthouses here offer good value, and the atmosphere is relaxed without feeling completely dead.

Avoid Potos on the southern coast if you are watching your budget. It caters heavily to package tourists, prices reflect that, and you will pay more for less character. Pefkari nearby is similar.

For the tightest budgets, self-catering studios in Limenas or Prinos are the way forward. Prinos is quieter, slightly less convenient, but accommodation runs noticeably cheaper and has good ferry connections to the mainland.

Mid-range budget travelers get excellent value from studios with kitchenettes in Skala Rachoni or Skala Kallirachi, small coastal settlements with local life still intact and fewer tour groups.

The single booking mistake people consistently make is reserving July and August accommodation too late expecting prices to stay low. Thassos has grown in popularity with Eastern European and Balkan visitors in particular, and the good-value places disappear months in advance. Book those specific months at least three to four months ahead. For June or September, you have more flexibility, prices drop noticeably, and the island honestly feels better with the smaller crowds.
