Where to Stay in Valencia

Valencia’s most practical base is the Ciutat Vella, the old city center, which puts you within walking distance of the Cathedral, the Central Market, and the main tapas streets. Hotels here in the mid-range bracket typically run between 80 and 140 euros per night, and you get the genuine neighborhood feel without sacrificing comfort. The Barrio del Carmen within the old city is particularly good, lively at night but still manageable, with solid three-star options that have been recently renovated. El Cabanyal, the former fishing district near the beach, has become increasingly popular and offers good mid-range apartments and boutique guesthouses, though it sits about a 25-minute walk or quick tram ride from the historic center. For beach access combined with reasonable prices, this neighborhood delivers well.

Russafa, just south of the train station, is Valencia’s creative quarter and arguably the most enjoyable neighborhood to actually live in for a few days. Restaurants here are outstanding, the streets are walkable, and mid-range hotels and well-run apartments cluster around the main market square. It feels less touristy than the old center while remaining extremely convenient.

What to avoid is the immediate strip surrounding the main train station, Estació del Nord. This area has a concentration of overpriced, tired hotels that trade on location rather than quality. You pay more for less. Similarly, budget travelers can squeeze costs by booking apartments in Russafa or El Cabanyal rather than hotels, gaining kitchen access and more space. Luxury seekers should look at the converted palaces in Ciutat Vella or the polished hotels along the Turia gardens, which offer something genuinely special without requiring you to leave the center.

The single booking mistake people consistently make is reserving accommodation near the Las Fallas festival dates in March without checking cancellation policies. Prices triple, minimum stays get imposed, and if your travel dates shift even slightly, you can find yourself locked into expensive non-refundable reservations. Book refundable rates during festival periods until your plans are absolutely confirmed, then switch if needed. Valencia rewards anyone who plans this small detail correctly.
