Visiting Otranto in February

# Otranto in February: The Town Actually Belongs to You

February in Otranto is essentially a roll of the dice with the weather. Southern Puglia sits far enough south that you can genuinely get mild, almost spring-like days where you’re walking the harbour wall in a light jacket thinking you’ve cracked the travel code. You can also get driving rain sweeping in off the Adriatic that makes the whole whitewashed old town feel like a beautiful, slightly miserable film set. Sometimes both happen on the same Tuesday. Come prepared for either and you won’t feel cheated.

What February does guarantee is something the summer crowds completely destroy: the town itself. Otranto’s historic centre is genuinely one of the most striking in southern Italy – the Cathedral with its extraordinary medieval mosaic floor, the Aragonese castle, the old city walls – and in February you walk through all of it largely alone. No tour groups wedged in doorways, no queuing to look at the floor, no competing for the view from the walls. Locals are actually living here, cafes feel like neighbourhood spots rather than tourist traps, and the pace drops to something human.

In terms of what’s open, manage expectations. Some restaurants operate reduced hours or close on weekdays entirely. A few accommodation options shut for the winter. The beach bars along the lungomare are firmly shuttered. But the cathedral is open, the castle is accessible, the old town walks are there regardless of season, and you’ll find enough places to eat and drink without stress.

Is it worth going? Honestly, yes – but for a specific type of traveller. If you want beaches, seafood restaurants competing for your attention and summer energy, February will disappoint you. If you want unhurried access to one of Italy’s genuinely special small towns, beautiful architecture with elbow room and a slower, more authentic version of the place, it’s arguably the best time to visit.

**Practical tip:** Book accommodation with flexible cancellation. February weather can genuinely flip the experience, and having the option to adjust your plans costs you nothing but gives you real peace of mind.
