Visiting Otranto in May
# Otranto in May: Worth the Trip?
May is genuinely one of the better times to visit Otranto, and if you’re considering it, you’re probably making a smart call – but let me give you the real picture rather than the brochure version.
**What the weather’s actually like**
May in Otranto sits in that pleasant middle ground – warm enough to enjoy but not the suffocating heat that rolls in from July onwards. Expect temperatures broadly in the low-to-mid twenties Celsius most days. The catch is that early May can still throw surprise rainy spells at you, and the Adriatic does what it wants. Pack a light jacket and don’t schedule your entire trip around beach days. Late May becomes noticeably more reliable, and the sea, while swimmable for enthusiastic types, is still pretty fresh for most people.
**Crowds and atmosphere**
This is where May earns its reputation. Italian and European school holidays haven’t kicked in yet, which means the old town – the cathedral with its extraordinary mosaic floor, the Aragonese castle, the narrow whitewashed streets – actually belongs to you. You can stand in front of that cathedral floor and think, rather than shuffle past it behind forty people on a guided tour. Restaurants are open, staff are relaxed, and you’ll get a table without planning three days ahead.
**What’s open**
Pretty much everything that matters. The cathedral, the castle, the harbor area – all operating normally. Some seasonal beach clubs are just opening up, which means they’re keen rather than bored. A few very small local spots might still be running reduced hours in early May, but nothing that’ll derail your trip.
**Is it worth it, and for whom?**
Yes, especially if you’re a history or architecture person, a photographer, or someone who actively dislikes crowds. Less ideal if your main goal is a proper beach holiday – you’d be better served coming back in June.
**One practical tip**
Book accommodation early anyway. Otranto is small and the good options – particularly anything with a sea view in the old town – disappear faster than the crowds suggest they should.
