Visiting Agrigento in May
Visiting Agrigento in May
# Agrigento in May: Worth the Trip?
May is honestly one of the better times to visit Agrigento, and I say that as someone who’s been there in August and nearly melted into the pavement outside the Temple of Concordia.
**What it actually feels like**
May sits in that sweet spot where Sicily has woken up from its quieter spring but hasn’t yet turned into a furnace. Temperatures are comfortably warm, typically somewhere in the low-to-mid twenties Celsius, occasionally nudging higher toward the end of the month. You can walk the Valley of the Temples for a couple of hours without it becoming a survival exercise. Evenings are pleasant enough to sit outside without a heavy jacket. Rain is possible, particularly earlier in the month, but you’re unlikely to lose a full day to it. Pack a light layer and don’t stress.
**Crowds**
Better than summer, worse than February – which is basically the honest answer for everywhere in Sicily. Weekends can feel noticeably busier, especially if a cruise ship has docked at Porto Empedocle. Weekday mornings, particularly before 10am, you can genuinely have sections of the archaeological park almost to yourself. That early quiet, with the temples catching the morning light, is something you’ll actually remember.
**What’s open**
Pretty much everything. The Valley of the Temples is fully operational, the Archaeological Museum is open, and the town of Agrigento itself is functioning normally rather than in low-season reduced hours. Restaurants are serving, accommodation has good availability without peak-season prices. It’s a functional visit, not a “half of it is closed” situation.
**Is it worth it, and for whom**
Yes, genuinely. May suits history enthusiasts, walkers, photographers, and anyone who wants to engage with the site rather than simply survive it. It’s less ideal if you’re chasing a beach holiday – the sea is swimmable but still cool.
**One practical tip**
Buy your Valley of the Temples tickets online before you arrive. The queue at the ticket office can eat 45 minutes of your best morning light.
