Look, December in Cefalu is genuinely unpredictable, and anyone who tells you otherwise is guessing. Sicily’s north coast can throw you mild, almost-pleasant days in the low teens with actual sunshine, or it can deliver grey skies, wind off the sea, and rain that makes the medieval streets feel like a moody film set. Sometimes both in the same week. Pack layers and accept the uncertainty upfront.

What you’ll actually find is a town that belongs to itself again. The summer crowds that clog that famous beach and queue for the Norman cathedral have completely evaporated. You’ll walk through the narrow streets of the old quarter without dodging selfie sticks. The cathedral, genuinely one of the most beautiful things in Sicily, you can actually stand in front of and think. That alone is worth something.

Most restaurants stay open, particularly the ones that locals actually use rather than the tourist-facing spots near the waterfront, some of which shutter until spring. The main streets have some Christmas decorations up, and there’s a quiet, slightly melancholy charm to it. This isn’t a buzzing winter destination. It’s a small Sicilian town getting on with its life.

The beach is obviously not the point in December, so if golden sand was your reason for coming, genuinely reconsider. But the town has enough – the cathedral, the Rocca fortress hike with sweeping coastal views, decent food, wandering – to fill a couple of days comfortably if you’re not solely sun-dependent.

Worth it? For a certain kind of traveller, absolutely yes. If you enjoy having beautiful places without the noise, like slow mornings in a cafe watching rain on cobblestones, and aren’t devastated by the possibility of a grey afternoon, December Cefalu is quietly wonderful. If you need reliable warmth and beach vibes, you’ll be disappointed and probably a bit cold.

**Practical tip:** Book a hotel with heating you can actually control. Some older buildings run on charm alone, and December nights get genuinely chilly.
