Visiting Montpellier in April
# Montpellier in April: What It’s Actually Like
Montpellier in April is genuinely one of those months where you could have a brilliant time or feel slightly cheated, and honestly it depends on the week you pick.
**The weather situation**: Spring arrives in Montpellier but it arrives cautiously. You’ll get days that feel genuinely warm and Mediterranean, maybe 18-20°C with that particular southern light that makes the limestone buildings glow. Then you’ll get days that are grey, chilly, and being battered by the Tramontane wind, which is cold, persistent, and absolutely ruins outdoor café plans. April rainfall is moderate but arrives in bursts rather than drizzle – a heavy shower, then sunshine an hour later. Pack a light waterproof rather than an umbrella.
**Crowds**: This is genuinely one of April’s strongest arguments. Montpellier isn’t overrun with tourists at the best of times compared to nearby Sète or Nîmes, and in April you’re comfortably ahead of the summer wave. The Place de la Comédie has breathing room. You can actually browse the Marché du Lez without being shoulder-to-shoulder with everyone.
**What’s open**: Pretty much everything. Montpellier isn’t a heavily seasonal city – it has a large student population keeping things alive year-round. Restaurants, the Musée Fabre (genuinely underrated French art collection), the botanical garden, all operating normally. The Promenade du Peyrou is lovely when the weather cooperates.
**Is it worth it and for whom?** Yes, if you’re someone who likes a city for itself rather than guaranteed beach weather. Montpellier rewards wandering, eating well, and poking around neighbourhoods. The Écusson, the medieval old town, is excellent for that. It’s less suited to people banking on outdoor terrace life every single day.
**One practical tip**: Build the Fabre museum into a morning and keep afternoons flexible. When the weather turns, you’ll be grateful for a solid indoor anchor. When the sun appears, you can drop everything and head to the Antigone district or catch a tram to the coast at Palavas-les-Flots.
