Honestly, Bastia gets overlooked because Ajaccio gets all the glory as Corsica’s capital, and that’s a genuine shame. This is the island’s largest city, a proper working port town with no particular interest in performing for tourists, which is either its greatest charm or its biggest flaw depending on what you’re after.
**The good stuff first.** Terra Nova, the old Genoese citadel quarter, is legitimately beautiful in a crumbling, sun-bleached way. Narrow staircases, laundry lines, cats on windowsills, the real thing. The Vieux Port is photogenic without being precious about it – fishermen still actually use it, which matters. Place Saint-Nicolas is a genuinely pleasant promenade for an evening walk and a glass of something cold. Nobody is hustling you anywhere.
The two things that justify the entire trip, though, are outside the city. Cap Corse, the finger of peninsula pointing north, is one of the most dramatic coastal drives in the Mediterranean. You need half a day, a small car, and no particular schedule. Villages clinging to cliffsides, turquoise water below, almost nobody around. Absolutely worth it. Patrimonio, thirty minutes away, produces wines that punch well above their international profile – the Muscat especially. Stop at a domaine, taste seriously, buy several bottles.
**Now for the honest part.** Bastia itself can feel slightly grey and rough around the edges in ways that aren’t entirely romantic. Some of the streets behind the port are genuinely tatty rather than characterfully worn. The restaurant scene is decent but unspectacular – you’ll eat well but rarely brilliantly without some research. If you’re travelling from mainland France expecting the polished prettiness of, say, Bonifacio in the south, you may feel mildly deflated on arrival.
Mid-range budget works fine here. Hotels are reasonable, meals in local spots won’t hurt you, and the crowds genuinely are low. You’re not fighting anyone for anything.
**The verdict.** Don’t come to Bastia expecting a highlight reel destination. Come because you’re doing Corsica properly and the north deserves proper time, because Cap Corse alone earns the visit several times over, and because there’s something quietly satisfying about a French city that hasn’t been smoothed down for easy consumption.
It’s worth it. Just arrive with accurate expectations.
