June is genuinely one of the better times to visit Shkoder, and I’d say that without much hesitation. The city sits in northern Albania near the lake and the mountains, and by June the temperatures are warm but haven’t yet tipped into the brutal mid-summer heat that makes afternoon sightseeing feel like punishment. You’re typically looking at highs around 28-30°C, which is comfortable enough to walk the old bazaar, climb up to Rozafa Castle, and cycle around Lake Shkoder without completely melting.

Rainfall is the honest catch. June sits in that transitional zone where the wet spring hasn’t fully surrendered to dry summer, so you can get caught in a decent downpour without much warning. It’s not constant, and it won’t ruin a trip, but pack something waterproof and don’t schedule your castle visit for the only afternoon you have if storms are forecast. Check the actual forecast the day before rather than trusting monthly averages.

Crowds are light to moderate. Shkoder doesn’t get overwhelmed the way Berat or the Riviera can, even in high summer, so June feels genuinely relaxed. You’ll see more backpackers and adventurous independent travelers than tour groups. Everything worth visiting is open – Rozafa Castle, the Marubi National Museum of Photography, the waterfront restaurants along the lake. The cycling infrastructure around Lake Shkoder is operational and honestly underrated.

Is it worth visiting in June specifically? Yes, particularly if you’re combining it with Theth or the Valbona Valley for hiking. June is peak season for those mountain routes and Shkoder works perfectly as a base or stopping point. It’s also a city that rewards people who actually want to engage with somewhere real – it has history, decent coffee, a functional local life – rather than a beach resort crowd who need guaranteed sunshine.

**Practical tip:** Rent a bike on your first morning. The flat ride along the lake toward the Montenegrin border gives you the city’s geography and atmosphere faster than any walking tour, and it costs almost nothing.
