Visiting St Julian’s in December

# St Julian’s in December: The Honest Version

Look, December in St Julian’s is genuinely interesting, but probably not in the way the glossy travel sites suggest.

The weather is the classic Mediterranean “it depends” situation. Malta sits in a reasonably mild climate zone, so you’re looking at temperatures hovering around 14-18°C during the day, which sounds pleasant enough until the wind comes off the sea and cuts straight through you. Rainfall is genuinely unpredictable. December is technically one of Malta’s wetter months, and you can absolutely land in a week of grey drizzle where Spinola Bay looks less like a postcard and more like a slightly soggy provincial harbour. You can equally get crisp, bright days with ridiculous winter light. Pack layers and accept the gamble.

The crowds situation is where December actually earns some points. Paceville, which in summer is essentially a theme park of British hen parties and noise complaints, is dramatically quieter. You can walk along the promenade without performing an obstacle course. The restaurants that survive year-round are open and genuinely happy to see you, service is unhurried, and you might actually get a table at somewhere decent without booking three weeks ahead.

Some beach bars and seasonal operations close or reduce hours, so if your vision of St Julian’s involves sunbathing and cocktails at noon, recalibrate that immediately. The water is cold. The core restaurants, bars around the bay, and most attractions remain accessible though.

Is it worth visiting? Yes, with the right expectations. It suits people who actually want to explore rather than perform a holiday. Wandering Balluta Bay with a coffee, eating fresh fish somewhere quiet, using St Julian’s as a base for day trips to Valletta or Mdina, which are genuinely beautiful in winter light — this version works well. It’s terrible for beach holidays. It’s quietly good for everything else.

**Practical tip:** Book accommodation in Balluta Bay rather than near Paceville. You get the pleasant side of the neighbourhood without any residual weekend noise, even in low season.
