July and August are honestly worth avoiding if possible. Mellieħa Bay becomes one of Malta’s most packed beaches during these months, with sun loungers occupying every inch of sand and road traffic creating genuine frustration throughout the town. Prices rise sharply and the heat can feel oppressive, regularly exceeding 35 degrees inland.
Winter brings a quieter, more introspective side to Mellieħa. From November through March the town slows considerably, some smaller restaurants close entirely, and the sea feels genuinely cold. It suits budget-conscious travellers who prefer atmospheric solitude over beach activities.
The insider tip worth knowing involves ferry timing. The Gozo ferry departs from nearby Ċirkewwa, and visiting on a Tuesday or Wednesday morning in shoulder season means you can combine a Mellieħa beach afternoon with a remarkably uncrowded Gozo day trip, making the most of your time in Malta’s quietly magnificent north.
