Honestly, yes — but with some caveats you should know before you book.
Mellieha sits at Malta’s northern tip, and it genuinely feels different from the island’s busier southern areas. The town itself is properly pretty — cascading down a hillside, whitewashed buildings, a main street that hasn’t been entirely swallowed by tourist tat. The Sanctuary of Our Lady is legitimately special. It’s carved into a cave beneath the parish church, candlelit and genuinely atmospheric in a way that doesn’t feel manufactured for visitors. Even if you’re not religious, spend twenty minutes there.
Mellieha Bay is Malta’s largest sandy beach, which sounds more impressive than it sometimes feels. In peak summer it gets absolutely rammed — umbrellas touching umbrellas, the water churned up by pedal boats. Visit in May, September or October and it transforms into something genuinely lovely. Shallow, calm, warm water, decent facilities. It earns its reputation outside the school holiday crush.
Mistra Bay for snorkelling is a solid recommendation if you’re willing to walk a bit to find it. Small, rocky, not glamorous, but the water is clear and the marine life is real. Nobody’s pretending it’s the Maldives, but it delivers.
Now, Popeye Village. I’ll be straight with you — it’s a film set turned theme park charging entrance fees that feel aspirational for what you actually get. Colourful for photographs, briefly entertaining for children, forgettable for everyone else. The external view from above is free and honestly sufficient. Don’t let it eat half your day.
The Gozo ferry at Cirkewwa is a ten-minute drive away, which makes Mellieha a genuinely sensible base if Gozo is on your list. That practical advantage is underrated when people are planning where to stay.
Budget-wise, Mellieha sits comfortably in the mid-range. You’re not paying Sliema prices, but you’re not roughing it either. Good restaurants, reasonable accommodation options, nothing that’ll make your eyes water.
**The honest verdict:** Mellieha is one of Malta’s more relaxed, liveable corners. It rewards people who want a beach base with some actual character rather than a pure resort atmosphere. Visit outside July and August if you can. Skip Popeye Village or keep it very brief. Do the cave church, find Mistra Bay, and use the Gozo ferry at least once.
Worth it. Just manage your expectations on the headline attractions.
