Bar doesn’t get the Instagram love that Kotor does, and honestly, that’s both its biggest problem and its greatest asset. This is a working port town, unglamorous and a little rough around the edges, and you need to go in with your eyes open.
**The Genuinely Good Stuff**
Old Bar is the real reason to come, and it delivers. This abandoned medieval city sits crumbling beautifully on a hillside about 4km from the modern town, and on a quiet weekday you can wander through ruined churches, Ottoman baths and collapsed palaces with almost nobody else around. It feels genuinely forgotten rather than staged, which is increasingly rare in this part of the Adriatic.
The ancient olive trees nearby are legitimately extraordinary. These things are over 2,000 years old and still producing fruit. Standing next to something that was already old when Rome was falling apart puts your problems in perspective pretty quickly.
Haj-Nehaj fortress perched above the coast rewards the climb with sweeping views, and the road south toward Albania through Ulcinj is some of the most underrated coastal scenery in the whole country.
The overnight ferry to Bari is a genuine highlight if you frame it correctly. It’s a slow, atmospheric crossing, cheap if you’re happy on a deck chair, and waking up approaching the Italian coast feels properly adventurous.
**The Honest Disappointments**
Modern Bar itself is not pretty. It’s a functional port town with heavy traffic, unremarkable architecture and a waterfront that prioritises cargo over cafés. You won’t be wandering charming cobbled streets here. The beach situation is also underwhelming compared to elsewhere on the coast.
Getting between the modern town and Old Bar requires either a taxi or serious commitment to walking in heat. Public transport isn’t organised around visitors’ convenience, because visitors aren’t really the point of this place.

**The Verdict**
Bar is worth one night, maybe two if you’re using the ferry connection or pushing into Albania. It suits curious, independent travellers who find beauty in decay and don’t need things prettied up for them. If you’re chasing a polished Montenegrin holiday, go to Kotor. But if you want somewhere that feels real, unhurried and genuinely cheap, Bar delivers more than it promises on the surface.
