Visiting Larnaca in January
# Larnaca in January: What It’s Actually Like
Look, January in Larnaca is not the glossy turquoise-water experience the brochures sell you. But it’s not a washout either, and honestly, it depends entirely on what you’re after.
The weather is genuinely unpredictable. Temperatures hover somewhere between 12 and 18 degrees Celsius most days, which sounds reasonable until you’re sitting outside a seafront café and a cold wind comes off the Mediterranean reminding you this is very much winter. You’ll get sunny days that feel almost spring-like, and then grey, drizzly stretches where the light turns flat and the whole town feels slightly melancholy. Rainfall is inconsistent — some January weeks are bone dry, others bring proper downpours. There’s no guarantee either way, so pack layers and bring waterproofs you’re not embarrassed to wear.
What you will get is the city almost entirely to yourself. The Finikoudes promenade, normally packed with sunburned tourists eating mediocre seafood, is peaceful and genuinely pleasant for a walk. Locals actually use it in January. The salt lake near the airport occasionally hosts flamingos this time of year, which is quietly spectacular and something most summer visitors completely miss.
The medieval Hala Sultan Tekke mosque is open, Larnaca Fort is open, and the Church of Saint Lazarus is open. Most restaurants in the town centre continue trading, though some beach-facing spots shut entirely until spring. Don’t expect much nightlife beyond local bars.
Is it worth visiting? For certain people, absolutely. If you want cheap flights, affordable hotels, zero queues, and a chance to experience a Cypriot town rather than a tourist resort, January delivers. History lovers, slow travellers, and people who find August crowds exhausting will find something genuinely appealing here.
If you need guaranteed sunshine and beach swimming, go somewhere else.
**Practical tip:** Rent a car. January is the best time to drive around Cyprus without traffic stress, and Larnaca alone won’t keep you occupied for more than a couple of days. The Troodos Mountains and Limassol are both easy day trips.
