**The beach is the real deal.** Fig Tree Bay earns its reputation honestly. The water is absurdly clear, shallow for a long stretch, calm almost every day, and warm from May through October. If you’re travelling with young children, this matters enormously. You can actually relax on the sand instead of spending three hours hovering anxiously at the water’s edge. That’s not nothing. That’s the whole point of a beach holiday for a lot of families, and Protaras delivers it consistently.
Cape Greco is genuinely worth the walk. Sea caves, dramatic coastline, decent snorkelling spots. It adds something real to the trip beyond just lying horizontal for a week. The Blue Lagoon boat trips are pleasant enough, though honestly they’re fairly standard Mediterranean boat-trip fare once you’ve been on a couple.
**Now the honest part.** Protaras is heavily, relentlessly developed. The strip of hotels, restaurants and souvenir shops lacks any real character. You’re not getting Cyprus here, culturally speaking. You’re getting a purpose-built resort that could theoretically be transplanted to several other Mediterranean coastlines without much disruption. The food ranges from decent to actively bad in the tourist trap category, and telling the difference requires some effort. Prices have climbed noticeably in recent years, and mid-range now feels like it bumps against expensive for what you actually receive.
The crowd levels are genuinely high in peak season. Fig Tree Bay in August is beautiful but packed. The atmosphere can feel slightly anonymous, like everyone arrived from a different flight and has nothing much in common except sunscreen and mild dehydration.
**The verdict.** Go if you’re prioritising safety, calm water, family logistics and reliable sunshine without too much planning effort required. You’ll have a good time on those terms. Don’t go expecting authentic Cyprus, interesting food culture, or anywhere that feels genuinely special. Protaras is a competent resort doing exactly what it promises. That’s genuinely useful sometimes.
If it’s your first time in Cyprus, consider splitting your stay with Nicosia or the Troodos mountains. Give yourself some contrast. Otherwise you might come home slightly flat, wondering if you actually went anywhere at all.
