Visiting Tunis in December
Visiting Tunis in December
# Tunis in December: The Honest Take
December is genuinely one of the more interesting times to visit Tunis, but not for the reasons a brochure would tell you.
The weather is mild by northern European standards and genuinely cold by local ones. Expect daytime temperatures around 14-17°C, dropping noticeably after dark. Rain is real and unpredictable – you can get a completely dry week or several days of persistent grey drizzle that makes the medina’s narrow streets feel more atmospheric to some people and deeply miserable to others. Pack a proper jacket and something waterproof. Don’t assume North Africa means sunshine.
The crowds are essentially gone. The medina, Sidi Bou Said, the Bardo Museum – you can move through these places at your own pace without being processed alongside tour groups. Locals reclaim these spaces in December and there’s something genuinely different about wandering the souks when they’re functioning for the city rather than performing for visitors. Shopkeepers are less aggressive, more conversational, occasionally just bored and happy to chat.
Most things stay open. The Bardo is open, the major archaeological sites remain accessible, restaurants in the city centre operate normally. Some beach-focused spots around La Marsa wind down, but that’s not why you’re here in December anyway.
Is it worth visiting? For culture-focused travellers, yes, honestly yes. If you want to spend serious time in the medina, eat properly, visit Carthage without sweating, and not feel like you’re on a conveyor belt, December works well. If you need reliable sunshine and warmth as part of your holiday, this isn’t your month – go in April or October instead.
The one practical tip: Friday afternoons catch people out. A significant number of sites and some restaurants close early or entirely. Plan your itinerary around this rather than discovering it outside a locked door. It’s not a big deal once you know, but it genuinely disrupts a day if you don’t.
Tunis in December rewards flexibility and curiosity more than most months. Just bring layers.
