# Sousse in August: What You’re Actually Getting Into

Let’s be straightforward with you: August in Sousse is hot. Genuinely, relentlessly hot. We’re talking temperatures regularly sitting in the mid-to-high 30s Celsius, sometimes nudging 40, with a sun that feels genuinely personal in its intensity. Rainfall is essentially a non-event — you might get a brief, dramatic shower once across your whole trip, or nothing at all. Pack accordingly, because you won’t need an umbrella but you will need more sunscreen than you think.

The crowds are real and worth knowing about. August is peak European summer, which means the medina is busy, the beaches are packed, and the tourist strip around the main hotel zone feels like a slightly chaotic outdoor mall. Families from northern Europe and a significant number of Tunisian domestic tourists fill the place out. If you were hoping for an authentic, quiet wander through the old quarter, you’ll find it — but you’ll find it alongside a lot of other people who had the same idea.

Everything is open, which is genuinely the upside. Restaurants, beach clubs, historical sites like the ribat and the medina, rooftop bars — it’s all running at full capacity. Boat trips, water parks, day excursions to El Jem’s incredible amphitheatre. August is operationally the easiest month to visit.

Is it worth it? For beach holiday people, absolutely yes. If you want sun, warm Mediterranean water, cold Celtia beer in the evening, and a reasonably priced resort experience with some genuine Tunisian character woven in, August delivers completely. If you’re primarily interested in history, culture, and comfortable exploration, honestly consider late September or October instead. The heat genuinely limits how much you want to walk around midday.

**One practical tip:** Do your medina exploring before 10am. Seriously. The difference between a 9am wander through the souks and a noon attempt is the difference between genuine pleasure and mild suffering. Get up early, see everything, then retreat to the pool guilt-free. You’re welcome.
